Five Fundamentals of Effective Classroom Practice (West Cohort)
This training is for headteachers and leaders of teaching and learning. The role of headteachers in the development of effective teaching is central to school improvement. The training will develop school leaders’ instructional leadership skills and understanding and their effectiveness in developing the quality and consistency of teaching across all classes. The new Ofsted framework has identified leaders’ impact on the development of teaching as a key area of focus and this training will explore how headteachers can best address this key area of leadership.
The course fee is for two attendees from each school.

Making Headway 2025-26 (Part 1)
A leadership programme for aspiring deputy headteachers, assistant headteachers and heads of school.
Aims of the programme are to:

These termly briefings aim to deepen the knowledge and understanding of headteachers and chairs of governors in respect of the current Ofsted inspection framework. The sessions are particularly targeted at schools who are likely to be inspected within the next 6 to 9 months.
A senior leader and chair of governors are invited to attend but do not need to book a place. Headteachers who have booked a place will receive the course details, which they should share.
The course price entitles a school to three places at the briefing (the headteacher, senior leader and chair of governors).

Headteacher Wellbeing Seminar 2025
Please note: this session is a repeat of the ones held in February 2025 so is only open to schools that did not attend the first time around. We are planning a further wellbeing event early in 2026, building on from these, with new content and resources.
Hampshire Improvement and Advisory Service (HIAS) is pleased to continue its focus on supporting school leaders in strengthening their wellbeing by holding a re-run of the Wellbeing seminar offered to schools in February 2025.
Hazel Anderson-Turner will be returning to deliver this half day session for a second time, aimed at supporting leaders to develop skills and have practical strategies to be supported in staying well whilst managing challenging contexts.
Hazel will focus on helping delegates build psychological flexibility, enabling us to think better, make better choices and to navigate our emotions in a healthier way, supporting us to consciously respond to challenges rather than instinctively react.

Secondary ConfidenceStepping with Confidence into Secondary Senior Leadership
Delivered by the Secondary HIAS adviser, this in-depth programme supports the future senior leaders in our schools.
This multi session course is aimed at established middle leaders who are thinking about the next steps in their career path. It would also be appropriate for newly appointed assistant headteachers or lead practitioners.
With many schools now 'growing their own' future leaders, this programme will support with a focus on ensuring colleagues understand the wide remit of a senior leader and give them inspiration, challenge and support to fulfil that role effectively.
This will ensure governors continue to be able to appoint experienced leaders ready to tackle the broad challenges facing senior leadership teams today.
Learning outcomes
- To explore a range of theoretical knowledge to consider how senior leadership is different.
- To understand how to effectively carry out a senior leadership role.

Autumn PAPGAutumn 25-26 Secondary Performance and Progress Group (PAPG)
The Secondary Performance and Progress Group (PAPG) is a very well attended network meeting that meets twice a year for comprehensive updates and discussion on matters of mutual interest to secondary school headteachers and senior leaders, particularly concerning improving outcomes, performance data and the curriculum.
All senior leaders are welcome to attend PAPG and contribute to the forum.
Meetings will be led by HIAS data and curriculum leads and will also draw upon HIAS teaching and learning, and subject expertise.
Key features of the meetings:
- To share crucial updates including changes to national policy, Department for Education (DfE) performance indicators and Ofsted frameworks.
- Changes in outcomes to performance indicators both locally and nationally are shared, and implications evaluated.
- Discussion around how schools are setting targets and measuring progress.
- Focus on improvement in outcomes for ALL pupils, particularly those in key vulnerable groups.
